A senior thesis gives you a chance to dive deeper into a research topic of interest. It is the culmination of your undergraduate research career at one of the best biochemistry departments in the country. The thesis experience will help you develop your reading, research, and writing skills, and many students find this a rewarding experience in which to develop new skills through independent work. Senior theses are two-semester commitments, and senior honors theses are often required by Honors programs here at UW—Madison. Senior Thesis and Senior Honors Thesis are two-semester course sequences for students in the lab of a Biochemistry department faculty member. You must be a senior and you cannot take the two semesters concurrently. Your senior thesis or senior honors thesis proposal should be two to five double-spaced pages with 1-inch margins and pt font.
Research is an integral part of our curriculum. Students will carry out short research projects throughout the curriculum in their regular classes, and are encouraged to work in faculty research labs to pursue an independent research project that can culminate in an undergraduate thesis. Ohio State offers well-equipped laboratories which contain sophisticated instrumentation for research. Whenever our department is made aware of research opportunities for our students, whether the opportunity is within the department, elsewhere within the university, or at another institution, students can find it on our Undergraduate Blog. Participation in undergraduate research benefits students educationally, professionally, and personally.
Science is a process, not a collection of memorized facts. Experimental research gives you an opportunity to apply knowledge learned in lecture courses and gain a deeper understanding of molecular processes. Lab work also helps you develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills, both of which are highly regarded by employers, graduate schools, and professional schools. While only four research credits are required for your degree, we encourage you to join a lab as soon as possible.
